Public Education Program of the Year - Awarded by WateReuse

We are committed to providing the East County community with a better understanding of the Advanced Water Purification Program. There are a variety of ways for people to learn about the program, including an award-winning video, group presentations, tours, education for kids and newsletters.

The communication and outreach goals of the Advanced Water Purification Program are to inform and educate East County stakeholders about the program, including providing information about the purpose and need of the program and to offer project updates. To accomplish this goal, the following activities have been carried out to communicate to the public about the program:

Electronic Newsletter – A program newsletter is regularly distributed to those who sign up to receive updates. Click here to sign up to receive this newsletter.

Social Media – The program has a strong presence on its own Twitter account (@EastCountyAWP) as well as on Padre Dam Municipal Water District’s social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Tours – Tours of the demonstration facility in Santee are offered on a monthly basis and as requested. More than 5,000 people have toured the facility. Click here to view available tour dates or to set up a group tour.

Special Events – In 2018 and 2019 program staff have hosted an informational program tent at Santee Lakes movie nights and some City of Santee summer concerts. In 2018, a Water Festival was held at the program’s visitor center to provide a fun way to educate the public about the project. More than 400 people attended.

Videos – Two videos were produced to provide information about the program in a visually and engaging way. Click here to view the videos.

Presentations – Program briefings have been provided throughout the region since 2015 and are offered to all public or community groups upon request. To request a presentation, please call 858-385-2240 or email [email protected].

Newspaper Articles and TV News – Staff have actively communicated with the local media offering program update information for reporting consideration. These efforts have been highly successful in achieving articles in local papers and segments on broadcast news.

Public Officials – Regular briefings are offered to elected officials to keep them updated on the program.

Water/Wastewater Bill Inserts – Program information has been regularly included in Padre Dam Municipal Water District’s mailed water and wastewater bills.

Annual Report – Padre Dam includes information about the program and its outreach in the District’s annual report.
